The Library of Birmingham, designed by Dutch architects Mecanoo under the direction of Francine Houben, opened on 3 September 2013 as a flagship cultural project for the city's redevelopment. Situated at Centenary Square in the city centre, adjacent to the Birmingham Rep theatre with which it shares facilities, this high-tech and postmodern structure replaced the earlier Birmingham Central Library. At an estimated cost of £188.8 million, it became recognized as the largest public library in the United Kingdom and the largest public cultural space in Europe. The building attracted 2,414,860 visitors in 2014, ranking it among the ten most popular visitor attractions in the UK.
