Designed by architect Richard Rogers in the high-tech style, the Millennium Dome opened in 1999 on the Greenwich Peninsula in South East London as a vast dome-shaped building housing an exhibition celebrating the turn of the millennium. When completed, it ranked as the fifth largest building in the world by usable volume. The exhibition remained open to the public throughout 2000 but attracted only around half of the twelve million visitors anticipated by its sponsors, resulting in widespread criticism. Rather than demolish the structure—despite the estimated £48 million value of its land—the decision was made to preserve it. Today, the Dome serves as the exterior shell of The O2 entertainment complex, which includes the O2 Arena. The Prime Meridian passes along its western edge, and the site is served by North Greenwich station on the Jubilee line.
