The Barbican Centre is a major performing arts complex in the Barbican Estate of the City of London, completed in 1982 and designed by the architecture firm Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. Built as a gift to the nation at a cost of £161 million, it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 3 March 1982. The centre's striking brutalist design, shared with the nearby Southbank Centre, houses a concert hall home to both the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, along with spaces for theatre, film, and art exhibitions. Its facilities also include a library, three restaurants, and a conservatory. The venue is known for hosting classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, and art exhibitions, and became the London home of the Royal Shakespeare Company again in 2013.
