The Barbican Estate is a massive residential complex of approximately 2,000 flats, maisonettes, and houses designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and completed in 1982 in the City of London, 1.4 miles northeast of Charing Cross. Built on land devastated by World War II bombing, this prominent example of British brutalist architecture was originally conceived as rental housing for middle and upper-middle-class professionals and retains its character as an upmarket residential community. The estate forms the core of the larger Barbican Complex, which also encompasses the Barbican Centre, the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, a public library, and the City of London School for Girls. The entire complex is Grade II listed, preserving its architectural significance, though the former Milton Court—which housed a fire station, medical facilities, and flats—was demolished to make way for The Heron, a new residential tower that provides additional space for the music school.
