Housed in Dyche Hall on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, the Natural History Museum is a Richardsonian Romanesque structure completed between 1901 and 1903, built from local Oread Limestone with decorative elements in Cottonwood. Designed to display the celebrated Panorama of North American Wildlife—which had represented Kansas at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago—the building was modeled after a French church and arranged to showcase the panorama in the entrance gallery's "apse." Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, Dyche Hall houses more than 350 exhibits spanning paleontology, zoology, and archaeology, including the mounted remains of Comanche, sole U.S. Cavalry survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and extensive fossils from the Kansas Chalk. The museum now anchors the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute, a research center stewarding over 10 million specimens and leading international efforts in systematics, evolution, and biodiversity informatics.
