The National Museum of Natural History, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is a Beaux-Arts structure designed by Hornblower & Marshall, Charles Follen McKim, and Daniel Burnham, and completed in 1910. Administered by the Smithsonian Institution, it was among the first buildings constructed exclusively to house the national collections and research facilities. The main building spans 1.5 million square feet, with 325,000 square feet dedicated to exhibition and public space. Its collections—the largest natural history collection in the world—encompass over 148 million specimens including plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and cultural artifacts. The museum employs some 185 professional natural history scientists, representing the world's largest group dedicated to the study of natural and cultural history. Free admission and 364 days of annual operation have made it one of the most visited institutions in the nation.
