Located on Pier 3 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium opened on August 8, 1981, designed by Peter Chermayeff LLC and Kevin Roche as part of a broader urban renewal initiative. The nonprofit institution houses more than 2.2 million gallons of water containing over 17,000 specimens representing more than 750 species across multiple exhibits, including an Upland Tropical Rain Forest, a multi-story Atlantic Coral Reef, and an open-ocean shark tank. The Australia: Wild Extremes exhibit earned the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' "Best Exhibit" award in 2008. A marine mammal pavilion opened on Pier 4 in 1990 and currently holds six Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, five of which were born at the aquarium. With annual attendance exceeding 1.5 million visitors, it remains Maryland's largest tourism attraction, advancing its mission to inspire conservation of global aquatic habitats through science, education, and exhibition.
