Upton, a Greek Revival mansion in the Upton neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, was built around 1838 as the country residence of David Stewart, a prominent Baltimore attorney and politician. The large brick structure rises 2½ stories on a raised basement, with three bays across its façade and a center-passage plan. In the late 1950s, a brick stair tower was added when the building was converted to school use, serving for decades as a facility for exceptional children before housing Baltimore City Public Schools offices through 2006. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, the mansion is now slated for renovation as the future headquarters of the Afro-American newspaper, with a $2.2 million federal grant announced in February 2023 to support the restoration and digitization of the publication's archives.
