Perched in the eastern Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, Ustra is a medieval fortress notable for its elevation and exceptional state of preservation among regional mountain fortifications. The stronghold passed between Byzantine and Bulgarian imperial control until the Ottoman conquest of the region in the second half of the 14th century. Its strategic prominence is reflected in the naming of Ustra Peak on Livingston Island in Antarctica.
