Vorotnavank is a monastic complex in Armenia's Syunik Province, situated along a ridge overlooking the Vorotan gorge between the villages of Vaghatin and Vorotan, about 14 kilometers east of Sisian. Founded around 1000, the monastery exemplifies Armenian architectural tradition and was fortified with a high stone wall against foreign invasions. The complex once encompassed workshops, stores, a seminary, a resort, a cemetery, and an alms-house, functioning as a vital religious and community center. A symbolic pillar in the monastery's yard marked the ordination of monks and the inauguration of kings. The site gained further historical prominence as the residence and workplace of Hovhan Vorotnetsi (1315–1398), a renowned Armenian medieval philosopher and theologian who founded Tatev Vardapetaran University.
