Built between 1889 and 1893 in Viipuri (present-day Vyborg, Russia), this Gothic Revival cathedral was designed by Carl Eduard Dippell for the city's Lutheran parish after a 1881 division of the congregation. Originally called the New Church, it became known as the Agricola Church following the 1908 installation of Emil Wikström's bust of Mikael Agricola on its façade, and served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Viipuri from 1925 to 1940. The building suffered extensive damage during the Winter War when it was struck by bombing on 3 February 1940. Though briefly restored after Finland reclaimed the city in 1941, the cathedral was completely dismantled following the Soviet reoccupation of Viipuri in 1944 and its aftermath.
