Originally constructed as Waitomo House with just six bedrooms, the hotel underwent substantial expansion between 1927 and 1928, when 24 additional rooms, a new kitchen, and dining room were added to accommodate growing tourism. The building exemplifies a distinctive New Zealand Victorian architectural style and holds Heritage New Zealand Category 2 historic place status.
