The Walter J. Squire House in Somerville, Massachusetts, built in 1885, is a well-preserved transitional dwelling that blends Italianate and Queen Anne styles. Its 2½-story, front-gable form with three-bay side entrance follows Italianate conventions typical of the period, as do its paired cornice brackets and window hoods. The porch, however, signals the emerging Queen Anne aesthetic through turned posts and a rising sun motif adorning its gable. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the house exemplifies the stylistic evolution occurring in American residential architecture during the 1880s.
