Located at 55 School Street in Waltham, this 1902 school building was designed by Samuel Patch and Robert Glancey in a blend of Romanesque and Classical Revival styles that reflected local architectural tastes of the era. Expanded in the 1920s, it served as Waltham's high school until 1969, when a new facility opened elsewhere in the city. The building subsequently housed Central Junior High School through the 1980s before falling vacant. Following its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the structure underwent careful restoration: the 1920s additions were removed to reveal the original 1902 façade, and a modern addition was constructed behind it. Reopened in 2003 as John W. McDevitt Middle School, named for a former superintendent, the building preserves its historic exterior while accommodating contemporary educational needs.
