Designed by Japanese architect Von Jour Caux and completed in August 1983, Waseda El Dorado (also known as Rhythms of Vision) stands near the Waseda University campus in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The building synthesizes revival Art Nouveau with Japanese cultural motifs in a visually eclectic interior. A giant Buddhist stave's hand descends from a ceiling of stained glass, while wrought-iron balconies curve in the form of lily pads and a zigzagging banister frames Art Deco stained-glass windows. Ceramic figures adorned with tattoo designs, green-gold wallpaper printed with Edo-style woodblock patterns, and iridescent tiles featuring inlaid mother-of-pearl detail complete the ornamental scheme.
