Washington National Airport's terminal and south hangar complex represents a significant blend of modernist and classical design idioms from the mid-twentieth century. The main terminal, completed in 1941, exemplifies Stripped Classicism and Art Deco influences, while the south hangar line—originally comprising seven structures, later reduced to six—was finished in 1948 and reflects the functional elegance of Streamline Moderne design. Designed by Charles M. Goodman and another architect, the complex, located in Arlington County, Virginia, merges Colonial Revival sensibilities with contemporary aeronautical engineering. Recognized as a National Register of Historic Places listing and Virginia Historic Landmark, the terminal and hangar line stand as important examples of airport architecture from an era when aviation facilities were conceived as public gateways reflecting both practical requirements and civic aspirations.
