The Wawona Tunnel is a highway tunnel in Yosemite National Park in Mariposa County, California, completed in 1933 in the National Park Service rustic style. Named after the nearby community of Wawona, the tunnel's etymology remains uncertain, though local tradition holds that Wawō'na may derive from a Miwok word meaning either "big tree" or "hoot of the owl"—the latter associated with the spiritual guardianship of sequoia trees. The tunnel and the scenic Tunnel View just beyond its eastern portal were finished the same year, facilitating access through the park's dramatic terrain.
