Built in 1917–18, the Wessington Springs Carnegie Library in South Dakota exemplifies Prairie School architecture through its restrained, horizontal design. Architect F. C. W. Kuehn of Huron, South Dakota crafted the structure in brown brick with a characteristically low profile, overhanging hip roof, and geometric decorative details befitting the style's emphasis on organic, streamlined forms. Originally serving as a public library, it remained in active library use well into the twenty-first century, and was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, when it was one of only eight Carnegie libraries in South Dakota still functioning in their original capacity.
