Built in 1911 with a $5,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation, the Lake Andes Carnegie Library in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, exemplifies Prairie School design—a style used in only 3 percent of all Carnegie libraries nationwide. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, it was recognized for its significance both to South Dakota's Carnegie Library program and for its simplified Prairie aesthetic, a rare architectural choice among the 25 Carnegie libraries built in the state. The building remains the town's public library, having received subsequent support from organizations including the South Dakota State Library and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
