Located at the junction of Conduit Head Road and Madingley Road in west Cambridge, the White House is a pioneering Modernist residence completed in 1930–31. Designed by New Zealand-born architect George Checkley as his own home, it stands as Cambridge's first house in the Modernist style and among Britain's earliest examples of the International Style. The flat-roofed, white-rendered structure exemplifies Cubist principles, drawing direct inspiration from Le Corbusier's French work. Now Grade II listed, the building represents a watershed moment in British domestic architecture.
