Built in 1894 for William S. Weir Jr., a prosperous Monmouth, Illinois businessman and inventor, this Tudor Revival residence at 402 East Broadway exemplifies the architectural ambitions of the Gilded Age industrialist. Weir had amassed his fortune selling plows and cultivators of his own design beginning in the 1860s, and continued to profit from ventures in stoneware and pottery manufacturing as well as real estate development. The house displays characteristic Tudor Revival features: ornamental half-timbering adorns the façade, a steep cross-gabled roof commands attention, and decorative multi-pane windows punctuate the exterior. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the house stands as a material testament to Weir's success and to the architectural tastes of late nineteenth-century Midwestern entrepreneurs.
