The Wilson Building, a two-story Italianate commercial structure erected in 1876 in Fairfield, Iowa, served as both an investment property and political office for James F. Wilson, a prominent Republican congressman and future U.S. Senator. Wilson, who had helped establish the First National Bank of Fairfield in 1865 and co-founded the Jefferson County Coal Company in 1870, maintained a Senate office in the building from 1883 to 1895 during his two terms in the United States Senate. The building's historic significance derives from its association with Wilson's dual influence on Fairfield's economic development and his substantial political career. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
