The Yue Hwa Building stands at the junction of Eu Tong Sen Street and Upper Cross Street in Singapore's Chinatown, next to Chinatown MRT station. Designed by Swan and Maclaren and completed in 1927, this Art Deco structure was originally the tallest building in Chinatown and operated as the Nam Tin Building. It originally housed the Great Southern Hotel, notable as the first Chinese hotel in the region to feature a lift, along with shops and cabarets serving Chinese travellers. Following its acquisition by Hong Kong businessman Yu Kwok Chun in 1993, the building was converted into Singapore's first Yue Hwa Chinese Products department store in 1994. The renovation carefully preserved the exterior facade while introducing modern interior features including an atrium and waterfall, earning the building the Architectural Heritage Award from the Urban Redevelopment Authority in 1997.
