Built in 1928 by the architectural firm Hewitt, Emerson & Gregg, the YWCA Building in downtown Peoria, Illinois exemplifies Colonial Revival and Neoclassical design. Located at 301 Northeast Jefferson Avenue, the structure was erected after the local YWCA chapter—founded in 1893—raised $350,000 in just eight days to replace its overcrowded original quarters. Dedicated on September 16, 1929, the building originally housed an auditorium, swimming pool, chapel, club rooms, and residential facilities for 86 people. The organization vacated the premises in 2003, eventually closing entirely in 2012. Since 2008, the building has served as New Hope Apartments, a supportive housing facility with 79 units created through an $8 million renovation that adapted the former gymnasium and pool spaces. The YWCA Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
