Zografou Monastery is one of the twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched on Mount Athos in Greece's North Aegean region. Founded in the late 9th or early 10th century by three Bulgarian monks from Ohrid, it remains the historical Bulgarian monastery on the Holy Mountain and continues to be inhabited by Bulgarian Orthodox monks. Built in Byzantine architectural style, the monastery takes its name from a 13th or 14th century icon of Saint George believed to have painted itself miraculously—zograf meaning "painter" in Greek, derived from words signifying life and scribe. The complex is part of the Mount Athos UNESCO World Heritage Site.
