Rising 265 metres above Melbourne's Collins Street, this postmodern skyscraper was designed by Hassell in association with Daryl Jackson and completed in 1991. The fifty-storey office tower pays homage to New York City's Art Deco heritage through its granite façade, stepped setbacks, and distinctive central mast—details echoing the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Completed with a 220-metre roof and 45-metre spire in August 1991, it stood as Australia's tallest building for fourteen years before the Q1 surpassed it in 2005, and held the title of Melbourne's tallest until Eureka Tower rose higher in 2006. Today it ranks among the nation's and city's most prominent commercial addresses, housing major financial institutions and professional firms across its office floors and four levels of plant.
