Twenty-one cast-iron benches installed along the Embankment pavement in Westminster in 1874 exemplify Egyptian Revival architecture applied to utilitarian street furniture. Designed by Lewis Vulliamy and George John Vulliamy, the benches feature ornamental detailing in keeping with the period's fascination with Egyptology. Now Grade II listed, they represent a distinctive moment when architectural ambition extended to public seating.
