Standing in London's City of London financial district, 30 St Mary Axe is a postmodern skyscraper completed in 2004 and popularly known as The Gherkin for its distinctive bulbous, vegetable-like silhouette. Designed by Foster and Partners with Ken Shuttleworth and built by Skanska, the 41-storey structure rises 180 metres and was constructed from concrete, glass, and steel on the site of the former Baltic Exchange and Chamber of Shipping, destroyed in a 1992 bombing. The building won the 2003 Emporis Skyscraper Award and has become one of London's most recognisable landmarks of contemporary architecture.
