The Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany, is a performing arts venue designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, whose competition-winning design was selected in 1959 but not built until 1983, seven years after the architect's death. Opened on 25 September 1988 with Wagner's *Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg*, the theatre houses the opera company Aalto-Musiktheater, the Aalto Ballett, and serves as home to the Essener Philharmoniker orchestra. The auditorium is distinguished by its asymmetrical layout and indigo blue seating. While primarily devoted to opera and ballet, the venue also hosts concerts and galas. Under conductor Stefan Soltesz's leadership from 1997 to 2013, the Essener Philharmoniker earned the title Orchestra of the Year in 2003 and 2008, while the Aalto-Musiktheater was named Opera House of the Year in 2008 by the magazine Opernwelt.
