Located in Springfield, Illinois, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum was completed in 2005 by architectural firm HOK. The institution documents the life of the 16th U.S. president and the American Civil War, combining traditional scholarly resources with 21st-century exhibition techniques to create one of the most visited presidential libraries in the country. Beyond its Lincoln collection, the library houses materials from the Illinois State Historical Library, which was founded by the state in 1889. Unique among presidential institutions, it operates as an agency of Illinois state government rather than under affiliation with the National Archives and Records Administration.
