Built in 1890 for Adams Davenport Claflin at 156 Grant Avenue in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, this large 2½-story wood-frame house was designed by architect Samuel Brown in the Shingle style with notable Queen Anne and Colonial Revival elements. The asymmetrical composition features abundant gables and projections characteristic of Queen Anne architecture, while Colonial Revival details include a Palladian window and pedimented front porch. Claflin, son of Massachusetts Governor William Claflin, was a prominent businessman and major landowner in Newtonville who served as president of the Boston and Suburban Electric Company and played a significant role in developing Newton's streetcar system. The house, one of several Brown designed for the Claflin family, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
