A rare local commission by nationally renowned Boston architect Hammatt Billings, this two-story Second Empire residence at 170 Otis Street in Newton, Massachusetts was constructed in 1870–71 for Charles Ellis and his wife Emma Claflin Ellis, daughter of Massachusetts Governor William Claflin. The house's defining feature is its mansard-roofed tower rising to two and one-half stories and crowned with decorative iron cresting. The building was recognized for its historical significance when listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
