The AfE-Turm was a 116-meter brutalist skyscraper completed in 1972 in Frankfurt's Westend district, serving as the tallest building in the city until 1974. The 38-storey tower, with its asymmetrical profile of 30 floors on the south side and 22 on the north, was part of the Bockenheim campus of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University and housed offices and seminar rooms for the departments of Social Sciences and Education. Named after the Department of Pedagogy (Abteilung für Erziehungswissenschaft), the acronym AfE proved ironic, as the very department that inspired its name never occupied the building, having closed before the tower's completion. The structure stood for over four decades until its demolition on 2 February 2014.
