Amalienborg is the official residence of the Danish royal family in Copenhagen, comprising four identical Rococo palaces arranged around an octagonal courtyard designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved and completed in 1760. Originally built for four noble families, the complex features Classical façades with ornate Rococo interiors and centers on an equestrian statue of Frederick V. After Christiansborg Palace burned in 1794, the royal family purchased the palaces and established their residence there, where successive Danish monarchs, including the current King Frederik X and Queen Mary, have lived. Recognized as a monument on Denmark's national heritage register and a UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Site, Amalienborg remains both a functioning royal home and significant architectural ensemble of eighteenth-century Copenhagen.
