Located in the Uzumasa Matsumoto-cho neighborhood of Ukyō Ward in Kyoto, Amazuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped burial mound dating to around 600 CE. Built during the Kofun period in the zenpō-kōen-fun (square-fronted, round-backed) style characteristic of elite tombs, it stands among a cluster of similar monuments in the Sagano-Uzumasa region associated with the Hata clan, a powerful group of immigrant settlers whose influence dominated this area from the late sixth to early seventh century. Designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1978, the mound represents an important archaeological witness to the funerary practices and social structures of early medieval Japan.
