Built in 19 CE in Lyon's first arrondissement, the Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls (Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules) was part of a sanctuary dedicated to the cult of Rome and Augustus, where representatives of the 60 Gallic tribes would convene for religious ceremonies. This Roman structure, an example of ancient Roman architecture, served a crucial role in the religious and political life of Lugdunum during the early imperial period. The site was classified as a French historical monument in 1961 and remains an important archaeological testimony to Roman Gaul.
