Saint Andrew's Monastery, founded in 1389 by Andrijaš, son of King Vukašin, stands in the Treska Gorge near Mount Vodno, some 17 kilometres southwest of Skopje in North Macedonia. Situated on a natural platform beside the Treska River just above what became Lake Matka, the monastery exemplifies Byzantine architecture with its cross-plan church crowned by a trefoil apse—the eastern trefoil serving as the altar while northern and southern trefoils function as choirs. The exterior features two rows of semicircular niches; a porch was added in the mid-16th century. The church interior is remarkable for its extensive frescoes, painted by Metropolitan Jovan and monks Makarij and Grigoriy, whose work departs from traditional iconography to achieve greater clarity and spatial sophistication. The compositions are arranged in three levels: saints and apostles below, episodes from Christ's life and the Passion in the middle register, and Christ with the Apostles in the dome's tambour above. Among the finest works is their "Prayer on the Mount of Olives," distinguished by skillful perspective rendering. Remarkably, most of the original inscriptions and paintings from the monastery's 1389 foundation have survived intact.
