Located near the village of Lešok in Tearce Municipality, North Macedonia, at 638 metres elevation on the southeastern slope of Mount Šar Planina close to the Kosovo border, Lešok Monastery is a Byzantine complex housing the churches of St. Athanasius of Alexandria and the Holy Mother of God. The monastery developed from an earlier monastic site founded during the reign of Serbian king Stefan Uroš II Milutin (r. 1282–1321), evolving into the episcopal seat of the Bishop of Lower Polog following the establishment of that diocese in the mid-14th century. A 1326 charter by Stefan Dečanski documents the Church of the Holy Mother of God as a dependency of the Prizren diocese. The present monastery was substantially rebuilt in 1818, after nearly five centuries of sparse historical records following the Ottoman conquest. In the late 19th century, the monastery became subject to competing ecclesiastical claims between Bulgarian and Serbian Orthodox authorities.
