The Aqsunqur Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, stands in the Tabbana Quarter of Cairo's Darb al-Ahmar district, positioned between Bab Zuweila and the Citadel. Built in 1347, the mosque serves as both a place of worship and a funerary complex, containing the mausoleums of its founder Shams ad-Din Aqsunqur, his sons, children of the Bahri Mamluk sultan an-Nasir Muhammad, and Ibrahim Agha al-Mustahfizan, who undertook the mosque's principal restoration. Located within Islamic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the building exemplifies Islamic architecture of the Mamluk period.
