Surb Astvatsatsin, or the Holy Mother of God Church, stands on a plateau overlooking the Arpa River and the village of Areni in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province. Built in 1321 and designed by the architect Momik, this single-nave two-aisled domed structure exemplifies Armenian ecclesiastical architecture of the medieval period. Its commanding hilltop location and distinctive architectural form have secured its status as a cultural heritage monument in Armenia.
