Artscape Theatre Centre, Cape Town's principal performing arts venue, opened in 1971 on reclaimed land in the Foreshore area of the city's central business district. Originally commissioned by the Provincial Administration of the Cape Province and operated by CAPAB (Cape Performing Arts Board), the complex was designed and built by Murray and Roberts Construction. Its inaugural season featured works by Verdi, Mozart, and Puccini, though the opening production of *Aida* was replaced by CAPAB Ballet's *Sylvia* due to the illness of the title-role singer. The facility comprises three auditoria: an opera house seating 1,487, a theatre with 540 seats (variable depending on pit configuration), and an arena theatre accommodating 140. Originally named the Nico Malan Theatre Complex after the Cape administrator who initiated the project, it was privatized and renamed in 2001 following CAPAB's dissolution. Today the centre hosts the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Town Opera, and Cape Town City Ballet, and also houses Fine Music Radio and oversees the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre.
