Built in Cape Town in 1939 and opened in 1940, the Mutual Building stands as a fine example of Art Deco architecture, originally designed as headquarters for the South African Mutual Life Assurance Society, now known as Old Mutual. The structure showcases distinctive Art Deco features including a dramatic ziggurat form, prismoid triangular windows, and one of the world's longest carved stone friezes. Its interior once housed a banking hall, assembly room, and directors' board room of considerable architectural interest. Though the company relocated within two decades to Pinelands and later to Johannesburg as it expanded internationally, the building survives as a converted residential structure with selective commercial use, including the Banking Hall repurposed as an events venue and ground-floor retail operations.
