The Asian Arts Museum of Nice, inaugurated in October 1998, is a striking monument to Asian art and culture situated near Parc Phœnix in southern France. Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kenzō Tange in collaboration with François Deslaugiers, the museum embodies a bold architectural vision: a structure that appears to float above an artificial lake, creating the illusion of weightlessness amid lush vegetation. Tange conceived the building as "a jewel of snow shining in the azure of the Mediterranean," achieved through a sophisticated interplay of contrasts—robust marble-clad solid forms juxtaposed with transparent walls that convey lightness. The dramatic setback of walls at the water's edge enhances the impression of defying gravity. The museum was established following Pierre-Yves Trémois's donation of his Asian art collection in the mid-1980s, with backing from then-mayor Jacques Médecin, and it developed its collections from this foundational gift.
