Auerbach Castle stands on the Urberg, a hilltop within the Melibokus range overlooking Bensheim in southern Hesse, Germany. Originally founded by Charlemagne, the fortress was substantially rebuilt in the second quarter of the 13th century under Count Diether IV of the Katzenelnbogen dynasty. One of numerous fortifications dotting the Bergstrasse, the castle survives as a cultural heritage monument, its strategic position long commanding the landscape of this region along Germany's wine route.
