Constructed of concrete and completed in March 1943, Avery Point Light stands 55 meters tall on the Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut in Groton, Connecticut. Though built during World War II, the lighthouse was not illuminated until May 1944 due to fears of enemy invasion, operating initially with eight 200-watt bulbs before conversion to a flashing green light in 1960. Deactivated in 1967 when the Coast Guard Training Station relocated, the structure fell into disrepair until declared a hazard by the university in 1997. A comprehensive restoration began in 2001 through the American Lighthouse Foundation and local civic groups, involving extensive structural repairs, replacement of deteriorated concrete blocks, and reconstruction of the lantern. The relighting ceremony took place on October 15, 2006, following completion of the $250,000 restoration project. The lighthouse is recognized as Connecticut's last lighthouse built and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
