This sports complex in Baghdad was originally designed by Le Corbusier in 1956 under commission from King Faisal II as a potential venue for the 1960 Summer Olympics, though political upheaval following the 1958 coup led to design and location revisions. After Le Corbusier's death in 1965, his extensive drawings and studies for a comprehensive sports complex—which had included a stadium, tennis courts, and swimming pools—remained largely unrealized. Only the gymnasium portion was ultimately constructed between 1978 and 1980, inaugurated and subsequently named after President Saddam Hussein. Situated adjacent to al-Sha'ab Stadium, the facility was occupied by American troops following the Fall of Baghdad in 2003.
