Home to Manchester City since 2003, the Etihad Stadium is a 61,038-capacity venue in Manchester designed by KSS Design Group and Populous and constructed by Laing Construction at a cost of £112 million. Originally built in 1999 to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games as a 38,000-seat athletics arena, it was converted post-Games into a football stadium at an additional cost of £42 million (split between the city council and the club). The innovative structure, engineered by Arup, features a distinctive cable-stayed roof supported entirely by twelve exterior masts and cables—a design that earned the Royal Institute of British Architects' award in 2004 for inclusive design and a special commendation from the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2003. Beyond domestic football, the stadium has hosted the 2008 UEFA Cup final, England internationals, rugby league and rugby union matches, boxing world title fights, and summer music concerts. A 7,000-seat third tier was completed in 2015, and a £300 million North Stand redevelopment programme began in 2023, expected to reach completion by 2026.
