Emirates Stadium in Holloway, London, is a football venue designed by Populous and completed in 2006 as the home of Arsenal Football Club. The stadium's construction followed decades of planning: after Islington Council blocked expansion of Arsenal's previous home at Highbury in 1997, the club purchased an industrial estate in Ashburton Grove in 2000 and received approval to build in 2001. Manager Arsène Wenger called the relocation decision the most significant in club history since the appointment of Herbert Chapman in the 1920s. The £390 million project, which began in earnest in 2004 after financial obstacles delayed earlier starts, was completed as Highbury was redeveloped into the residential complex Highbury Square. With a capacity of 60,704 seats, Emirates Stadium ranks among England's largest football grounds. Its pitch has earned the affectionate nickname "the Carpet" among supporters and media for its internationally recognised quality. The stadium regularly hosts international matches and music performances, and since 2009 has undergone "Arsenalisation"—a programme restoring visual connections to the club's heritage.
