Standing on Whitehall in central London, the Banqueting House is the grandest surviving example of its architectural genre and the only major remnant of the Palace of Whitehall, the English monarchs' residence from 1530 to 1698. Designed by Inigo Jones and completed in 1622, it represents a watershed moment in English architectural history as the first large structure executed in the classical Palladian style that would subsequently transform the nation's building traditions. Begun in 1619 at a cost of £15,618, the building was enriched in the 1630s with ceiling paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. Though its façade was refaced in Portland stone during the nineteenth century, the original details were faithfully maintained. Today it stands as a Grade I listed national monument, managed by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces and open to the public.
