Located in Salvaleón de Higüey in the Dominican Republic, the Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia is a minor basilica and cathedral dedicated to the nation's patroness. Designed by André Jacques Dunoyer de Segonzac and completed in 1971, the structure exemplifies brutalist and modern architecture. Pope Paul VI elevated it to basilica status in December 1970, the same year the painting of Our Lady of Altagracia—venerated since 1571 and believed to miraculously relocate itself—was installed in the cathedral. The edifice attracts over 800,000 pilgrims annually and has received papal recognition, including a visit from Pope John Paul II in 1992. The basilica's prominence extends to Dominican national life, appearing on the nation's 50-peso note and hosting the annual Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, celebrated on January 21 as a national holiday.
